Why The Padres Could Win This Game

Even though their season is over, the Padres aren’t getting any breaks. They finish up this series with the Dodgers before closing against the Giants.

Vince Velasquez takes the ball for San Diego tonight looking to end the series on a bright note. Velasquez has made 21 starts and three appearances out of the bullpen this year, amassing an ERA of 6.22.

It’s hard to find many bright spots in Velasquez’s season. At the very least, he had his best start in over a month in his last start, holding the Braves to just two earned runs in three innings of work.

It looks like Jayce Tingler has recognized that getting Velasquez out quickly at signs of danger is important. In three starts, Velasquez has pitched only eight innings for the Padres.

This means the Friars ‘pen will get plenty of work tonight. The Padres have one of the best bullpens in the league, ranking with one of the lowest ERA’s and WHIP in baseball.

San Diego is going to need some bullpen excellence and a similar offensive explosion from last night to win this game. Considering what they did to Scherzer yesterday, they’ll have a decent shot of getting to Tony Gonsolin tonight.

Gonsolin’s biggest weakness is one of the Padres biggest strengths. The righty has walked an insane 32 batters in only 51.0 innings of work this year.

San Diego’s lineup has drawn the fifth most walks in the league this year, and they have plenty of bats that should take advantage of Gonsolin’s erratic ways if he comes out wild.

Scherzer only went 5.1 innings last night. Gonsolin will go even less if he doesn’t have his best stuff. We could see an overworked Dodgers bullpen be asked to get four-plus innings tonight. The Padres might not get nine runs again, but they’ll do some damage.

Why The Dodgers Could Win This Game

With their hopes of winning the division looking dead in the water last night, the Dodgers rallied using four home runs in the eighth inning to win it. Still, Los Angeles needs to essentially win out and hope for some Giants slip-ups to somehow steal the NL West.

That journey starts tonight with Tony Gonsolin on the mound. Gonsolin has been a dependable short-innings arm for the Dodgers, pitching to a 3.00 ERA in just 51.0 innings this season.

Los Angeles doesn’t expect distance out of Gonsolin. He hasn’t pitched more than 5.1 innings in over a year. What they can expect is a few quality innings before handing the ball off to an elite bullpen.

In 12 starts this year, the righty has pitched at least three innings and given up 0-1 earned runs in nine of them. He’s a mix of an opener and a long relief pitcher at this point, but considering who the Dodgers are facing tonight, that might be more than enough.

Vince Velasquez has been absolutely shelled by nearly every quality offensive team that he has faced this year. Velasquez has made 11 appearances against teams that are top ten in OPS, and pitched 36.2 innings against such teams. In that span, Velasquez allowed 36 earned runs for an ERA of 8.89, gave up nine home runs, and walked 25 batters.

Considering the Dodgers are ninth in the league in OPS ranking, we should be ready to see some serious damage done in Velasquez pitches more than three innings.

Even in a short span, Los Angeles should rough up Velasquez early. Expect L.A. to get to the righty within the first two innings and jump out to a quick lead.

Final Padres-Dodgers Prediction & Pick

The Dodgers have all the momentum right now, and are going up a pitcher that has been one of the worst in the league this season. Considering how loud their bats were last night, Velasquez is not the guy that will quiet them down. Even a mediocre performance from Gonsolin and the Dodgers bullpen should get the job done tonight and complete the sweep. Last night, we cashed thanks to a late homer barrage on the Dodgers run-line. Tonight, it should be much more comfortable. Back Los Angeles to get a dominant win once again.

FINAL PADRES-DODGERS PREDICTION & PICK: LOS ANGELES DODGERS -1.5 (-115)
