The Houston Astros have already started to turn the page to their new batch of stars. Several of the main guys from the 2017 team start to fade and find new homes and Alex Bregman could be next.

Bregman, Jose Altuve, Lance McCullers Jr. and Justin Verlander (save for his brief half-season spent with the New York Mets) are the only Astros players still with the team since their first World Series in 2017. But the 29-year-old's contract is set to expire after the 2024 season. Altuve's contract situation is the same but rumors indicate that the former MVP's future in Houston will eventually be handled.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports, the Astros lack confidence that Bregman will be with Houston for the rest of his career.

“While agent Scott Boras says that the Astros have yet to approach him about contract extensions for All-Star infielders Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman, who are free agents after the 2024 season, a high-ranking Astros executive said their intention is to keep Altuve for the duration of his career but are highly skeptical they can also retain Bregman.”

Bregman's home run power isn’t what it once was but he remains a very good hitter (who still its home runs at an above-average rate). Last season, he posted a .804 OPS across 161 games with 25 home runs and more walks (92) than strikeouts (87). The Astros would need to find a new star in his place should they allow him to hit free agency next offseason.

Should Bregman leave, the Astros would miss a surefire hitter in the second spot in their lineup. Having him being Altuve and in front of Yordan Alvarez makes it tough for opposing pitchers. He remains a decent defender, too.

Key players from the 2017 Astros like George Springer, Carlos Correa, Yuli Gurriel and Charlie Morton have moved onto new teams. The likes of Alvarez, Kyle Tucker and Jeremy Peña are the faces of Houston's future as they each help the team win now. With plenty of other veterans still leading the charge, Houston should either extend Bregman or trade him now and get prospects in return.
