The Pittsburgh Steelers did not go all out to revamp their defense over the free agency period, although they did bolster their linebacker depth with the signing of Myles Jack.

After being released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on March 15, Jack came to terms with the Steelers on a two-year deal later in the week. Even though he had interest from several other teams in free agency, he opted to sign with the Steelers, where he is slated to have an opportunity to continue to be a regular starter in the NFL.

Speaking to 93.7 The Fan, Jack reflected on the call to join Pittsburgh, where he noted that the team’s hiring of Brian Flores played quite an instrumental role in this decision.

“It’s a blessing in disguise,” Jack said. “That’s really the main reason I came here because I knew I was going to get coached up. And with Coach Flores, he’s a head coach, clear as cut. He’s a head coach in this league, so for me to have him on a one-on-one basis, and coach up the linebackers, I think it’s stealing for me.

“Any question I can ask, he has an answer. It’s great. It’s great coming from what I’m used to.”

After his departure from the Miami Dolphins following a three-season tenure as their head coach, Flores elected to join the Steelers as their new linebackers coach. Flores, who has a notable 14 years of coaching experience in the NFL, will also serve as a senior defensive assistant for the team in the 2022 campaign.

Flores has had plenty of experience in coaching some of the more versatile linebackers in the NFL today. For one, he worked closely with the likes of Kyle Van Noy and Dont'a Hightower during his three-season run as linebackers coach for the New England Patriots in the last decade.

Now in Pittsburgh, Flores sure will look to get the best out of the likes of Jack and Devin Bush. He already had a chance to work with Jack during the opening week of the Steelers' OTAs.

In the big picture, a crucial campaign awaits the Steelers’ linebacker unit later this year.
