The Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to trade former 2022 first-round pick Wendell Moore Jr. to the Detroit Pistons before Day 2 of the 2024 NBA Draft, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Moore, who was selected 26th overall by Minnesota in the 2022 NBA Draft, has barely played for the Timberwolves over his two years in the league. With other young forwards such as Josh Minott and Leonard Miller on their roster, the Wolves decided to move on from Moore while he still presented some value on his rookie deal.

As part of this trade, the Timberwolves are also sending the No. 37 pick on Thursday to the Pistons in exchange for the No. 53 pick. More importantly than getting a draft pick back in return, Minnesota is able to cut their overall costs and tax bill by shipping Moore to Detroit.

Set to make $2.5 million in the third year of his rookie contract during the 2023-24 season, Moore being moved by the Wolves presents them with a small cost-saving tactic. Essentially, the Timberwolves will substitute Moore's $2.5 million contract for a $2 million veteran's minimum deal, which will save ownership a few million dollars when it comes to paying taxes for this team during the 2024-25 season.

This move by the Timberwolves comes after an eventful first round, where they moved up inside the top 10 to select Rob Dillingham. By adding Dillingham as a guaranteed rookie contract, Minnesota had increased their tax bill and total salary. It was expected that they would move one of the players sitting at the end of their bench, like Moore, to save a little bit of money as a result of making a trade in the first round.

In addition to adding Dillingham during the first round, the Timberwolves also kept their 27th overall selection and took Terrence Shannon Jr., a talented wing scorer that will replace Moore on the depth chart.

From the Pistons' and Trajan Langdon's perspective in the front office, they now get a chance to gamble on a young wing with two-way potential. Moore was viewed as a versatile wing when he entered the 2022 NBA Draft and was evaluated as a player that would be utilized as a cutter and slasher on the wing early on in his career.

Although he did not play much in Minnesota, Moore did average 19.0 points and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 38.6 percent from the floor in the G League this past year. After being traded to Detroit, Moore now joins a rebuilding Pistons squad with talents such as 2023 first-round pick Ausar Thompson and 2024 first-round pick Ron Holland on the wing.

The Pistons will have yet another opportunity to add an intriguing talent with the No. 37 pick in the second round on Thursday.
