The Ringer's founder Bill Simmons blasted the NBA regarding their handling of the draft lottery in response to a rule change from the NHL.

The NHL implemented a rule in which no team can win the draft lottery twice within a five-year span. The Oilers, Devils, and Sabres have all won the NHL draft lottery multiple times over the past 10 years. The rule helps eliminate forms of tanking and incompetence. The Montreal Canadiens ended up winning Tuesday's 2022 NHL lottery after losing in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2021.

The NBA draft lottery process has been a hot topic of debate for years. It has especially picked up steam over the last decade or so. The Cavaliers famously won the lottery three times in a four-year span that helped them land Kyrie Irving in 2011. Anthony Bennett was their other No. 1 pick in 2014, while their 2013 top pick was traded to the Timberwolves for Kevin Love.

These picks obviously enticed LeBron James to come back to Cleveland. Kyrie Irving was one of the main reasons why James was intrigued by a homecoming. Additionally, the uptick in teams tanking raised concerns on the NBA's draft lottery. In 2019, the league addressed said issues by making it less likely for the worst teams to get the No. 1 pick. While they still have the best odds, it's not nearly the same process and is more balanced overall.

With that being said, there are still flaws as Simmons pointed out. A team still has the chance to win the lottery multiple times within a few years. Last year's No. 1 pick, the Detroit Pistons, are tied for the best odds to win the lottery again this year at 14%.
