Veteran center Dwight Howard says he has “grown up” and doesn't have an ego anymore.

Ever since he requested a trade from the Orlando Magic, Howard has seen his star status in the league dwindle. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year has played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets and Wizards since his prime days with the Magic ended.

Dwight Howard only played in nine games this past season due to a back injury which required surgery. The Wizards agreed to trade Howard to the Memphis Grizzlies, who are expected to waive the veteran big man once the trade becomes complete. It's unknown if Howard will have a free agent market, but the former superstar wants everyone to know he's willing to do whatever it takes to help a team win.

“I don’t have an ego — it’s dead,” Howard told Shams Charania The Athletic. “It had to die for me to be who I am. Sometimes when you want to become who you want to be, you have to die within yourself. Once you learn that you have to give up yourself for the team, that’s when things flourish.

“I can be a kid when I’m home, when I’m with my kids. But when it’s time for business, time for basketball, time for learning, that is not the time to play around. You can have fun doing this stuff, but you got to be locked in. This is how I view things now. I’ve grown up. I’ve been through so many messes that I had to learn, where it put me in a position to understand the next position in life.”

Howard averaged 12.8 points and 9.2 rebounds with the Wizards in 2018-19 while shooting 62.3 percent from the field. It's going to be really interesting to see if a team takes a chance on the eight-time All-Star once he lands on the free agent market.
