NBA Summer League 2022 Format, Tiebreaker Rules

The 30 participating teams will play five games each in the competition. There won’t be a postseason or second round of sorts, with each team needing to win as much as they can in order to claim the top two in the seedings.

Basically, the two teams with the best record will play in the championship round.

Here’s the complete NBA Summer League 2022 format, courtesy of NBA.com:

  • All 30 NBA teams will participate in the NBA 2K23 Summer League 2022 from July 7-17 in Las Vegas.
  • A total of 75 games will be played in the 11-day competition.
  • Each team will play a total of five games.
  • Each team will play four games from July 7-15.
  • The top two teams from their first four games will play in the Championship Game on July 17. Seeding for the Championship Game will be determined by winning percentage.
  • The 28 teams not playing in the Championship Game will play a fifth game on either July 16 or 17.
  • Consolation games will be determined by various factors, including team rivalries, broadcast interest and other scheduling considerations (e.g., timing of back-to-backs).

Of course since there is a huge possibility of teams ending up in a tie record-wise, the league has also clarified the tie-breaker rules. If there are only two teams tied, the league will first consider the head-to-head matchup between them–albeit if it’s only applicable. The team who won the said meeting will receive the higher seed.

The second tie-breaker rule is using point-differential. Whichever team has the greater point differential receives the higher seeding.

In case there are more than two teams that end up tied in the standings, the league will first consider the point differential.

If in both instances the teams remain tied, there will be a “random drawing” to determine the seeding. The said random draw will be done via coin flip.

2022 California Classic and Salt Lake City Summer Leagues
