NBA Top Shot has always said that they intend to reward “true collectors” on the platform. They've made several moves in the past with this objective in mind, but perhaps there has been no more significant development than the recent overhaul of the Collector Score computation.

On Thursday, NBA Top Shot announced the details of the upcoming Metallic Gold LE rare pack drop along with the key updates on the Collector Score. There hasn't been too much going on in the space over the past couple of weeks, so this was something collectors have been looking forward to for quite some time now. As it turns out, only a small minority of the entire user base will qualify for the upcoming MGLE pack drop. Only those who have a Collector Score of 2,500 and above will be eligible for the drop, which historically, is the most stringent pack drop requirement NBA Top Shot has ever enforced.

For a bit of perspective, you'd need over 200 common moments in order to achieve that Collector Score. You can also reach the 2,500-mark through a combination of higher-tiered moments (rare, legendary, moments from sets, rewards, etc.). Whatever the case may be, this is indeed a lofty number — especially for those who haven't been on the platform for very long.

As an added incentive, NBA Top Shot also decided to implement what they're calling a “Drop Bonus,” which incorporates a user's historical Marketplace spend. That is, the amount of money you've spent on the Marketplace vis-a-vis the amount you've earned from sales will determine your Drop Bonus:

This clearly works in the favor of collectors who opt to hold their moments as opposed to those who sell them off. Moreover, it's also a way for NBA Top Shot to reward collectors who've stood strong amid the bear market. Read: those who have kept the faith despite how bloody red their account valuations may be over the past months.

Note that a screenshot of the Marketplace spend computation was already recorded on May 31 at 11:59 PM PDT. In my excitement, I overlooked this clause and began computing how much I'd need to spend on the Marketplace over the next couple of days in order to reach the 2,500-mark. That turned out to be an absolute waste of time.

It was also mentioned in the post that on top of the Marketplace spend bonus, collectors who have completed the entire Cool Cats set will also be given a Drop Bonus of 2,500 points. This will automatically make all Cool Cats collectors eligible for the upcoming MGLE drop. Although, it is also worth noting that it was already announced previously that all collectors who have the entire 30-moment Cool Cats set in their collections will be eligible for all the remaining pack drops for Series 2. Nothing new on this front. The Cool Cats issue is an altogether different matter, and I'd rather not touch that with a 10-foot pole.

Moving on, the latest blog post also touched on the upcoming Holo Icon legendary pack drop. While the drop schedule was not revealed, NBA Top Shot did say that the Collector Score for that pack will be “significantly higher” than the 2,500 requirements. Could we be looking at 3,500? Maybe 5,000? Who knows? What we can say for sure is that that drop is going to be more exclusive and reserved for even true-er collectors.

For those who qualified for the MGLE drop, congratulations. Good luck on snagging that pack, which at just $24, is going to be extremely +EV. For those of us who did not, however, perhaps it's time to re-evaluate our collection strategy?
