Just when Brooklyn Nets fans were getting used to the news that Kyrie Irving might still not be able to play even if NYC makes major changes to its vaccine mandate, just when it was made known Ben Simmons hurt his back while trying to ramp up to play, another piece of bad news dropped. According to Malika Andrews of ESPN head coach Steve Nash has been placed in the health and safety protocols and wouldn't be able to coach against the Toronto Raptors.

When it rains, it pours.

Nets fans know well that this can happen just before a game tips off. Remember back in December when the team had 10 players in health and safety protocols? Sometimes the update comes an hour before a game.

Blake Griffin once said it was like getting pulled out of class. “It’s almost like you get pulled out of class and everybody’s kinda like ‘ooooh!’ It’s just crazy man I don’t know how to like really describe it.”

Coach Steve Nash had just provided reporters with his perspective on possible COVID-19 mandate changes in his city, and whether or not the team expects that to effect Irving's part-time status down the road.

Nash sounded a little nasal, in hindsight, perhaps he has some cold or flu-like symptoms. Have a listen:

The team faces off against Raptors on Monday. OG Anunoby and Fred VanVleet are both out. As for the Nets, Kevin Durant, Joe Harris, Ben Simmons, and Kyrie Irving are out as well. It was already shaping up to be a battle of shorthanded teams, but now Brooklyn won't have their signal called on the bench either.

Hopefully Nash's symptoms are very light. Many of his players were asymptomatic at once point.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Assistant Jacque Vaughn will take over head coaching duties. The last game Vaughn coached came against these Raps as well.

The most important thing is Nash's health. He is vaccinated so that's great news. If that grants him some immunity, maybe he'll have a speedy recovery. There's nothing ideal about losing the sideline leader during such a tough stretch of the season. The Nets are in some really tough games playing without four starters on a near nightly basis, but as Nash had just talked about prior to the Raptors game, the team is prepared for adversity.

They've dealt with it all season and for the better part of 18 months. They'll have a plan for this too. Vaughn will lead the charge for the foreseeable future until Nash can test out of protocols for the Nets.
