Brian Flores' lawsuit against the NFL and three of its teams has the potential to reshape the league's hiring practices.

In the lawsuit, Flores revealed that several NFL teams that he was involved with displayed conduct towards him that undermined his legitimacy as a head coach. The Miami Dolphins tried to bribe him into losing. The Denver Broncos, who interviewed him in 2019 to be their head coach, didn't take it seriously, showing up late to the meeting. The New York Giants interviewed him despite already knowing who they would hire, as Flores' text messages with Bill Belichick showed.

On ESPN's Get Up, Flores revealed the key reason why he filed his lawsuit against the NFL (via Sal Capaccio of WGR 550):

“Because we need change. That's the number one reason. I know there's a sacrifice there, a risk. But we need change…we need to change the hearts and minds of the people making those decisions.”

Change in the NFL is much needed in several areas. The ability for minority groups to be thoroughly represented in places of power is one of them. The head coaches throughout the league don't reflect the player pool at all, as there is currently only one Black head coach (Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers) in a league with mostly Black players. There are no Black team owners, either.

The NFL's racial disparity and the actions that have created it have become too great for Flores to ignore. He has made it known that he is willing to sacrifice his coaching career in order to bring change to the league.
