In early April, NFL quarterback Cam Newton faced serious criticism after making some rather controversial comments about women and their roles in a relationship. That resulted in numerous people in the sports world firing back at him, including Travis Kelce's girlfriend calling Newton a “bozo”. Well, the veteran is now explaining why he made these comments.

On Friday, Cam Newton released a Youtube video called “Let Me Explain My Comments”. Here is what he had to say, per TMZ Sports:

“I should have said on top of what I also said and mentioned that not only should a woman know when to be quiet, a man also should know when to be quiet,” he said.

“Whether it's being whatever you need to be as a human being — man or female — you should be that. And, I think not going into depth like I should have, cost me.”

“I never wanted to demonize or to shrink the woman's power in America.”

Cam Newton certainly put his foot in his mouth after not going into detail about what he really meant. But at least he's trying to make things right. Newton repeatly said throughout the eight-minute video that he isn't sexist and “knows his heart.”

Take it for what you will.
