Cam Newton was drafted number one overall back in 2011 by the Carolina Panthers. He then spent the next eight seasons as one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL.

2019 saw a major setback, though. Newton appeared in just two games due to injury, marking the end of his tenure with the Panthers. During the offseason, Carolina released the quarterback.

After the release, many expected Newton to latch on to a new team rather quickly. However, the 2020 NFL Draft has come and gone and Newton is still waiting. It appears it's not really his decision either.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Newton is willing to consider a backup quarterback role if necessary.

That right there should tell you that the phone isn't ringing for Newton. This really doesn't make much sense either. Looking at the numbers, most would probably imagine he should already have a job, and one as a starter.

There are certainly quite a few teams with no quarterback on his level on their roster. However, sometimes it's a matter of fit.

There are teams with young quarterbacks who aren't at Newton's level yet. But those teams want to give the young quarterbacks a chance.

At the same time though, it's shocking that certain teams have not called about the quarterback yet.

Maybe this is what he needed to do to get the phone ringing. Showing he is willing to be unselfish to help a team win and be put in the right situation.

With Jameis Winston now with the New Orleans Saints, Cam Newton is the clear cut number-one QB in free agency. Could he be going to a team to be their number two though? It looks like he's starting to open up to the idea if it means finding a team.
