Tony Dungy and Rich McKay worked together in Tampa Bay, but are on opposing sides for now.

McKay, the Competition Committee chairman, wants to insulate “Hail Mary” plays from replay review for pass interference, calling it “survival of the fittest,” because he believes that in those situations the normal standard for pass interference evaporates.

Dungy, the Hall of Fame coach, took a strong stance against that train of thought.

“Why should illegal activity be allowed because it’s the last play of the game?” Dungy wrote on Twitter earlier this week in reaction to McKay’s comments.

Appearing on PFT Live Wednesday morning, Dungy elaborated more on the topic.

“If that’s the case, tell me that as a coach so I can coach it that way,” Dungy said. “Don’t officiate a certain way but I don’t know it. And to me, I don’t know how you can do that. I don’t know how you can say we’re going to review pass interference in the end zone except on Hail Mary plays. I think that doesn’t make sense at all … If it’s a penalty, it’s in the rule book, you need to enforce it.”

The reviewing of pass interference, mentioned above, is something Dungy believes is a risk to the game, per say.  The main thought being that the league is at risk of making an already tough situation worse by adding replay without thinking through all the ramifications of how it will change the way the game is called.

Hopefully everyone gets these issues ironed out before the new season starts.
