Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton have both agreed to separate deals to become the backup quarterbacks for the New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys, respectively.

But Cam Newton will not settle for the same role.

Joe Person of The Athletic reported there is “no way” Newton signs with a team under the premise he will be a backup quarterback. Person also stated Newton will continue training and wait for travel restrictions to be lifted so he can work out for any interested teams.

Newton became a free agent in March when the Carolina Panthers decided to cut him after signing former Saints backup Teddy Bridgewater. He was granted permission to seek a trade, but nothing materialized.

The 2015 NFL MVP has been beset by injuries in recent years. He struggled with a shoulder issue that eventually required surgery towards the end of the 2018 season, and played just two games last year before undergoing surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury.

Teams have likely been hesitant to sign Newton especially because of the inability to administer their own physicals amid the aforementioned travel restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. Regardless, Newton does not figure to have a large market if he wants to be a starter.

The Jacksonville Jaguars and Los Angeles Chargers are two teams that might look like intriguing fits.

Jags head coach Doug Marrone did say the team was interested in a veteran quarterback. However, Marrone also said Jacksonville was committed to Gardner Minshew.

Meanwhile, the Chargers selected former Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert with the No. 6 overall pick, and they seem fairly set on having Herbert compete with Tyrod Taylor.

Perhaps the Washington Redskins feel Newton would be an upgrade over Dwayne Haskins, but they already acquired Kyle Allen from the Panthers to compete with Haskins.

In any case, it does not appear Newton is in any hurry. He will continue to build his body up in the event teams come calling with an opportunity.
