Over the last several days, it has become quite a strange situation for veteran wide receiver Rishard Matthews after he asked for his release from the Tennessee Titans due to a decreased role in the offense.

This has subsequently put him on the open market where he could quickly find another home in the NFL to continue his career. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Matthews has hired Drew Rosenhaus to help him find another team. Several organizations are reportedly interested in Matthews and he is expected to sign soon.

The 2018 season got off to a troubling start for Matthews. He saw very little involvement in the Titans' offensive game plan, as he notched just three catches for 11 receiving yards through the first three games played. This significant drop off in production led to him asking for his release in order to get a fresh start elsewhere with consistent playing time.

Prior to the 2018 campaign, Matthews was a primary fixture in the passing game, recording at least 50 catches, 750 receiving yards, and four touchdowns in his first two years with Tennessee. However, things changed this year, as the team has leaned heavily upon second-year wideout Corey Davis to lead the way while Taywan Taylor has clearly made himself the number two option. The Titans have had much success throwing the ball this year, but only Davis, Taylor, and running back Dion Lewis have registered double-digit receptions. No other player has more than five catches.

Matthews can provide a team with a reliable receiving option that can play in the slot while also being a deep-ball threat. It may just be a matter of time before he finds his next landing spot in the league.
