The XFL will make its grand re-opening one week after Super Bowl LIV—giving the NFL a run for its money in what is normally the offseason for professional football. The Vince MacMahon–led league, an offshoot of the WWE, has one interesting supporter: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Goodell told Fox Business, via ProFootballTalk, that the XFL is a “positive” because it represents a greater investment in football.

“I personally look at it as a positive because people are investing in football, and they’re investing a significant amount of capital to create new football leagues,” Goodell said. “That just shows you the popularity of our game. In fact, what I usually hear starting next week is, ‘I’m going to miss football for the next six months. What am I going to do?’ They’re going to have an opportunity to see the XFL starting next week. People are investing in football. I think that only creates greater opportunities and, frankly, more fans.”

The Super Bowl and Pro Bowl (aired last week although it used to happen after the big game) used to signal the end of the football season, but when a refurbished XFL back on the airwaves, gridiron football doesn't have to hibernate through the spring and summer. Roger Goodell is aware of this.

The XFL previously only ran for a single season in 2001 and ratings did not fair well after an initial interested audience. The next season in 2002 was canceled due to lack of interest and viewers complaining in the quality of competition. This time around, however, the XFL is hoping to garner more attention due to former NFL players like Cardale Jones, Antonio Callaway, and Marquette King.
