The New Jersey Devils are coming off of a huge win against the Rangers yesterday, as they now head into Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs were unsuccessful at bringing in another goaltender at the trade deadline, so they'll be looking to just outscore opponents to win games. With that said, it’s time to continue our NHL odds series with a Devils-Maple Leafs prediction and pick.

Why The Devils Can Cover The Spread/Win

The New Jersey Devils know that they're not going to be making the playoffs this season, but they're purely focused on next season anyway. This young team is still developing and rebuilding, so I wouldn't be surprised if they are all of a sudden a really good team out of nowhere in a couple of years. The Devils have allowed the fourth-most goals per game this season at 3.59. The main reason for such a high number is through the Devils' poor goaltending. With that said, we should see Jon Gillies here in net tonight for the second half of a back-to-back scenario. Gillies is sporting a .887 save percentage while allowing 3.73 goals against per game. He'll look to be on his A-game tonight against a very strong Maple Leafs offense.

Why The Maple Leafs Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Toronto Maple Leafs come out of the trade deadline with surprisingly nothing really to write home about. They were on the hunt for a goaltender but picked up the veteran defenseman, Mark Giordano instead. The numbers for the Leafs aren't awful, but they've definitely regressed from where they were over most of the season. Goaltender Erik Kallgren has been pretty strong lately while he fills in for Jack Campbell, but he has a small sample size to show for it. Kallgren has played in just 4 games and is sporting a .930 save percentage while allowing 2.32 goals per game. He'll look to get the starting nod to help shut down the Devils tonight.

Final Devils-Maple Leafs Prediction & Pick

It's extremely tempting to take the over total goals here, but it's listed at seven, which is just such a high number for a total. Typically in cases like this where the number is astonishingly high, I take the under out of principle. However, both of these teams are genuinely struggling defensively, so the total actually kind of makes sense. I can feel myself talking myself into taking the over just so we can root for a back and forth shootout, so I'm going to go with it, but I want to move the line down to 6.5 instead of seven. In FanDuel, there's an option to take an alternative total, and the first option is 6.5 but listed at -174. I don't love those return odds, but it might be worth the investment.
