Why The Stars Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Stars got shut out at home on Sunday against the Avalanche but have still produced 4.25 goals per game in their four previous matchups. To say the Stars have been inconsistent this season would be an understatement, however, maybe they've found something to help get in the right direction as they're 7-3-0 in their last 10, which has slowly moved them up to being just three points behind the Anaheim Ducks for the last playoff spot in the West. The usual Dallas defense that fans are used to seeing has slowly gone downhill, mainly due to their goaltending. Seeing that Braden Holtby started last game, it's safe to assume that Jake Oettinger will get the start tonight between the pipes. He has a .910 save percentage this season and has allowed 2.58 goals per game through 20 starts.

If Dallas can get their offense rolling early and often, they have a strong chance to upset the Colorado Avalanche and get those desperately needed points for playoffs.

Why The Avalanche Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Avalanche return home while currently in the midst of a 9-0-1 run and also somehow finding a point in 19 straight games now. In fact, the last time the Avs lost in regulation was back on December 16th in Nashville. They're averaging over four goals per game, the most in the league, all with superstar Nathan MacKinnon only playing just 32 of their games so far. Colorado is beyond stacked with talent, with Nazem Kadri having a superstar career year so far, Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog doing what they do best, and the young depth on the team playing amazingly as well, such as Alex Newhook, Valeri Nichushkin, Andre Burakovsky, just to name a few.

While the Avs are far from a defense-first type of team, their top defenders do a pretty great job on both ends of the ice – Cale Makar, Devon Toews, Samuel Girard, Erik Johnson. Even their goaltenders are playing amazingly, as, while not official, Pavel Francouz will look to get the start in net tonight. He hasn't played since January, and you can assume they want to save Darcy Kuemper for their back-to-back game tomorrow night in Vegas. Francouz has only played in eight games so far this year, but after losing his first start, he's now won seven straight. He has a .927 save percentage and allows just 2.29 goals against. Look for the Avalanche to stay hot here as they remain the number one team in the league.

Final Stars-Avalanche Prediction & Pick

Because they're in the same division, these teams see each other a lot, including when they face off in the playoffs, which seems to be every year somehow. It's an even 2-2 on the year so far between the rivals and won't see each other again until they both eventually make playoffs in May unless of course the Stars somehow shockingly fall out of the race and don't find a way in. I'm taking the Stars +1.5 here. I think it'll be a high-scoring close game, and while I ultimately think the Avs will come out victorious, I love the odds here.

For a team to be underdogs and in the plus puck line all while only listed at -112 is a hockey better's dream. Of course, the Avs easily have the fire-power to cover 1.5 goals, but the Stars are a good team too and should never be slept on. Look for them to cover the spread tonight, especially with such great odds like this.

Final Stars-Avalanche Prediction & Pick: Stars +1.5 (-115)
