As expected, the Denver Nuggets are working to find a replacement for Jamal Murray, who injured his ACL against the Golden State Warriors on Monday. This time, they are reportedly leaning on signing free agent point guard Austin Rivers.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the two sides are in “serious talks” and could reach a deal pending the league's health and safety protocols:

For what it's worth, Rivers has already been linked to the Nuggets even before Murray's injury since the team lacks guard depth. However, the team's latest injury woe certainly added to the desperation to sign the playmaker.

Rivers now appears to be on the brink of getting a fresh start following what has been a disaster of the season. The 28-year-old started the campaign with the New York Knicks following an offseason trade from the Houston Rockets. Rivers fell out of favor with first-year Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau and he eventually found himself on the outside looking in.

The Knicks moved the 6-foot-4 combo guard prior to the trade deadline, sending him to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of a three-team trade. It did not take long before OKC decided to waive his services, sending Rivers to the waiver wire.

The Nuggets pounced on Rivers' free agent status and it now appears that they are in the final stages of bringing him to Denver. This comes at an opportune time for the Nuggets following Jamal Murray's unfortunate season-ending injury.

Denver is still expected to have a run at this year's title with MVP frontrunner Nikola Jokic leading the way for his team. However, the loss of Murray is an undeniably significant blow for them. Rivers is by no means a Jamal Murray, but the veteran does add some much-needed depth to Denver's depleted backcourt.
