The Green Bay Packers are trimming their roster down a player on Sunday morning. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Green Bay is deciding to release safety Josh Jones.

The Packers drafted Jones in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Coming out of North Carolina State, Green Bay was longing for Jones to be a mainstay in their secondary but injuries have plagued his short stay with the franchise.

In his two seasons in the NFL, the third-year safety has only started in 12 games on the defense. As for those 12 games, Jones combined to have 122 tackles, three sacks, seven pass deflections, and an interception.

Throughout training camp, Jones was dealing with an ‘unspecified injury‘ and missed the team's preseason opener against the Houston Texans. Along with his injury, the young safety skipped out on voluntary OTAs to request a trade from the Packers.

In the end, his trade request was for naught, as he showed up to training camp on time and told the team he was committed to helping the team win in 2019. Despite his decision to show up to camp, his future on the team was up in the air.

This offseason, the team signed Adrian Amos to a long-term deal and drafted Darnell Savage in the early rounds of this year's draft. Therefore, Jones' role on the team was beginning to diminish and his chances of sticking with the team were decreasing.

Ultimately, Green Bay didn't see Jones as a fit with the defense and decided to release him after just two seasons with the organization.
