Green Bay Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was noticeably not in attendance during the team’s organized team activities. Since he’s in the final year of his rookie deal, some speculated that his absence was due to him trying to hold out in search of a new contract.

However, Ha Ha has made it clear that that was not the case and that there were other reasons that factored into his decision to skip OTAs and just stay at home:

“I had a lot of freedom,” Clinton-Dix said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “It’s not meant for me to be here. I don’t have a [workout] bonus to be here, so that definitely played a big role in me not being here, honestly, along with my godmother not making it. It’s kind of like, I can just stay home with my family and enjoy my family time while I have the downtime. … S— goes on from time to time, but I’m excited not to have that bonus in there, though, honestly, because I would have definitely been here for my money.”

Clinton-Dix is set to make close to $6 million this year on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. And by showing up for the three-day minicamp, he avoids losing over $84,000 in fines.

Clinton-Dix says he won’t follow Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor’s lead of holding out back in 2015. He considers holdouts a “waste of time” and would rather get his money, which he “needs,” than lose it in fines.

After following up his Pro Bowl 2016 season with a disappointing campaign in 2017, Clinton-Dix will need to step up his game this year in order to land a big contract. But as the most senior safety on the team, he’ll have every opportunity to showcase himself on new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine’s defense.
