The Green Bay Packers may find themselves thin in the backfield, with the availability of halfback Jamaal Williams unknown ahead of Thursday's matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

Williams is just one of two players to come into close contact with halfback AJ Dillon, who tested positive for COVID-19. The other player that's come in close contact with Dillon is linebacker Kamal Martin.

Though health is the utmost important factor surrounding all three players, Jamaal Williams' availability to go on Thursday will deeply affect an already-depleted position for the Packers.

Starting running back Aaron Jones was already listed on a to-be-determined basis ahead of Thursday with a calf injury, meaning that even if he was available for action, he likely wouldn't play his usual amount of snaps.

Now with AJ Dillon out and second string Williams possibly on the cusp of being voided from the said contest, the Packers find themselves extremely thin in the backfield. The best-case scenario, of course, would be Jones being healthy enough to play against the 49ers, along with Williams being ruled out of the high-risk factor category. This would give them a somewhat normal amount of depth in the backfield.

If none of those cases come to fruition, the Packers will resolve to deploying Tyler Ervin as the starter. Ervin has attempted fewer rushes than quarterback Aaron Rodgers, completing four carries resulting in 43 rushing yards. They'll also depend on Dexter Williams, who's currently assigned to the practice squad.

Green Bay is coming off an upsetting 28-22 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8. With little time to recoup before Thursday's game, the hope is that most of the Packers players will at least be in good health.
