The Green Bay Packers made a rather surprising decision on Monday, hiring Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur as their new head coach.

LaFleur was probably more surprised than anyone else at the Packers' decision, telling Ryan Wood of The Green Bay Press-Gazette that he was floored when Green Bay offered him the job:

“When I tell you I was speechless, I was speechless,” said LaFleur. “I can't think of a greater place to be a head coach in this league, and really all of sports.”

LaFleur does not have any head-coaching experience, but he has built a very good reputation around the league for his offensive prowess. The 39-year-old served as quarterbacks coach of the Atlanta Falcons in 2015 and 2016, helping offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan build one of the league's most explosive offenses at the time.

He then became the Los Angeles Rams' offensive coordinator in 2017 and continued to build upon his resume, joining forces with head coach Sean McVay to incorporate a powerful offense that remains among the league's best this year. LaFleur then proceeded to join the Titans as offensive coordinator in January 2018.

The Packers are certainly one of the most prestigious organizations in the NFL and in professional sports in general, but they have fallen on some hard times over the last two years.

Green Bay went just 6-9-1 and missed the playoffs this season, marking the first time since 2006 that the Packers have failed to qualify for the postseason in back-to-back campaigns. Last season, Green Bay went just 7-9, largely due to the fact that Aaron Rodgers missed most of the year with a broken collarbone.
