The Green Bay Packers added another quarterback to the roster when they acquired DeShone Kizer from the Cleveland Browns in the deal that sent Damarious Randall the other way.

Kizer will compete with Brett Hundley for the main backup spot behind Aaron Rodgers for the upcoming season. However, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy sees star potential from the second-year quarterback.

“In my opinion, if he was in that class this year,” McCarthy said per Ryan Wood of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, “he would’ve been part of that group of first four guys, or first five. I always felt there were five, the five quarterbacks, first-round guys.”

McCarthy also complimented Kizer’s “exceptional arm talent” and believes he has a bright future in the league.

Kizer, whom the Browns took in the second round of last year’s draft, didn’t have such a promising start to his NFL career, though. He went 0-15 for the winless Browns, throwing for 11 touchdowns against 22 interceptions. His 60.5 passer rating ranked dead-last in the NFL.

However, Kizer was clearly not yet ready to start after coming out of college a year early, and he also wasn’t put in a position to succeed in Cleveland given the team’s decrepit roster.

Kizer will now get a chance to start over in Green Bay, where he will be able to develop behind Rodgers. And if he can come anywhere close to tapping into the immense potential McCarthy and the Packers see in him, he could still carve out a role as a starting quarterback in the league sometime, somewhere down the road.
