Mike McCarthy's tenure as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers came to an end earlier this evening. Following the team's disappointing loss against the Arizona Cardinals at home, the Packers made the quick decision to make the firing of their head coach official.

According to a report from Jay Glazer of Fox Sports after a conversation with McCarthy, the former Packers' coach made it clear that he was “proud” to have been a head coach for such a storied franchise.

Green Bay named Joe Philbin the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. McCarthy thought very highly of Philbin, but never gave him the freedom to run an offense.

More than likely, Philbin will not end up being the long-term coach for the Packers. Green Bay is going to be one of the most sought after landing spots for free agent coaches. Getting a chance to coach Aaron Rodgers is something that very few coaches would pass up an opportunity to do.

Josh McDaniels is a name that has come up as a potential candidate. Bruce Arians has also been rumored to be a target, although he has repeatedly stated that the Cleveland Browns would be the only team that he would come out of retirement to coach.

It will be interesting to see what the upcoming offseason has in store for the Packers. Brian Gutekunst, the Packers' general manager, will have some tough decisions to make. Firing McCarthy was just the start of some major changes that Green Bay is going to make.

Expect to see the Packers bring in quite a few coaching candidates for interviews. They cannot afford to miss on their next hire.
