The Carolina Panthers have exercised their option on wide receiver Torrey Smith, meaning Smith will be back with the Panthers next season, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

Smith played in 11 games this past season, catching just 17 passes for 190 yards and a couple of touchdowns, marking the worst season of his nine-year NFL career.

The 30-year-old has been on a significant decline over the past several years, as he has failed to register 500 yards the past three seasons.

Smith, who played his collegiate football at the University of Maryland, was originally selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round (58th pick overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.

He appeared in all 16 contests during his rookie campaign, hauling in 50 receptions for 841 yards and seven scores. He put up nearly identical numbers in his second season, snaring 49 balls for 855 yards and eight touchdowns.

Then, in his third year, Smith had the best season of his career, racking up 65 catches for 1,128 yards while reaching the end zone four times.

At the time, it appeared that Smith was ascending into the ranks of one of the top wide outs in the NFL, and the following season, he totaled 49 catches for 767 yards and 11 touchdowns.

That was Smith's final season with the Ravens, and since then, he has faded into obscurity.

He went on to play two years with the San Francisco 49ers, catching 53 passes total between the two seasons. The Colonial Beach, Va. native then spent one year with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017, bringing down 36 receptions for 430 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
