The Carolina Panthers came up short against the New Orleans Saints in Week 12. It appears that was not the only loss that was suffered over the weekend.

The Panthers have placed defensive tackle Dontari Poe and guard Greg Van Roten, via Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk:

Wednesday, the Panthers put defensive tackle Dontari Poe and Greg Van Roten on injured reserve.

The moves undoubtedly deal a crushing blow upfront to both sides of the ball. Of course, it should hardly come as any surprise since Carolina has now effectively had their playoff hopes dashed by New Orleans.

Poe suffered a torn quad during the 34-31 loss to the Saints. The former 11th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft had been in the midst of a career year for the Panthers with four sacks heading into the final stretch of the 2019 NFL season. The absence of a two-time Pro Bowler certainly leaves a rather notable void upfront and the team will be relying on defensive tackle Kyle Love to fill in as a viable replacement.

Meanwhile, Von Roten will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. After struggling to find his footing to start his career, he finally etched out an integral role at left guard and has served as the starter there for the past two seasons. It is safe to say he played a big role in helping running back Christian McCaffrey put up stellar numbers.

The Panthers have since signed defensive tackles Stacy McGee and Woodrow Hamilton in a corresponding move.
