Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton played in his first preseason game of the year on Thursday night, but things did not exactly end well, as Newton left the contest with an ankle injury.

The good news is that X-rays came back negative and that it is currently being diagnosed as a sprain, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network (more tests are coming Friday).

The bad news is that this is still an injury to the Panthers' franchise quarterback.

After the game, Carolina general manager Marty Hurney said that the club is “hoping it's not too bad” and that Newton will be evaluated on Friday, per Panthers play-by-play announcer Michael Pacheco.

Of course, it's not just that Newton got hurt. It's that he got hurt again.

Remember: Newton was shut down for the final two games of the 2018 campaign due to a shoulder issue, an issue that would ultimately lead to arthroscopic surgery during the offseason.

It marked the second procedure the 30-year-old has undergone on his throwing shoulder since the end of 2016, which has led some to worry about his longevity.

During the time Newton was on the field this past year, he threw for 3,395 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions while completing 67.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 94.2.

Nine of Newton's 13 picks came between Weeks 10 and 15 when it was obvious that his right shoulder was barking.

The Panthers went on to lose to the New England Patriots by a score of 10-3 on Thursday evening, dropping to 1-2 in the preseason. They will play their final exhibition contest next Thursday when they battle the Pittsburgh Steelers.
