Since the start of the offseason, there has been much uncertainty surrounding former Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers's future with the Carolina Panthers. There were indications that he is leaning toward returning for at least one year, but nothing more than that.

The door has remained open from the Panthers to welcome him being back in the fold if he desired to continue playing in the NFL. According to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, the 38-year-old is reportedly expected to sign a one-year deal with Carolina to take the field for his 17h season in the league.

The presence of Peppers could once again provide the Panthers a much-needed pass-rush despite him playing in a limited role at this point in his career. He proved to be an ageless wonder this past season, racking up 11.0 sacks. That marked his 10th career season with at least 10 sacks, becoming the fourth player in NFL history to have at least 10 or more sacks 10 times. He joins an exclusive list of Hall of Famers in that category in Bruce Smith (13), Reggie White (12), and Kevin Greene (10).

This will likely be the last season for Peppers' illustrious career, which will surely land him in the Hall of Fame. He currently ranks fourth all-time with 154.5 sacks, which is just 5.5 behind Hall of Famer Kevin Greene.

Although the chances of him passing Bruce Smith (200.0) and Reggie White (198.0) are slim since he is playing just one more season, he has a chance to at least push himself into the top three.

Peppers could be a key cog on the defensive line next season, especially with the departure of Charles Johnson earlier this offseason. This may open up more opportunities for him to be a factor in pass-rush situations and take on more responsibility if he continues to be productive.
