Carolina Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen made headlines with his stellar performance against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3. It seems Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson was hardly surprised by the promise he showed.

Both players had become well-acquainted during their rise to the NFL. According to Mark Lane of the Texans Wire, Watson revealed that he and Allen still workout together every offseason.

“I’ve been throwing with Kyle every offseason since high school, really,” Watson told reporters Wednesday. “We did Elite 11 together, we worked out at Orange County in college together in the offseason.”

Watson also praised Allen's work ethic.

“He’s that type of guy that’s going to compete and regardless of the adversity or the different paths he has to take, he’s going to always fight,” Watson said. “He’s a fighter, he’s a guy that loves football, he loves to compete and that’s what he’s been doing.”

There is certainly plenty of truth to Watson's comments. Allen signed with Carolina as an undrafted free agent and spent the bulk of his rookie year on the practice squad before being promoted after quarterback Cam Newton was shut down. He managed to win the backup job during training camp and now has a chance to prove himself as a bonafide starter with Newton dealing with injury once again

Although Allen may have taken the Cardinals by surprise, it is safe to assume that Watson is putting his defense on notice for their showdown in Week 4. He should have his work cut out against a group that has managed to ramp up their pressure on the edge in recent weeks.
