For the Carolina Panthers and their fans, Sunday's wild card game against the hated NFC South rival New Orleans Saints couldn't come soon enough. On gameday eve, the Panthers announced some news on their official Twitter account, as head coach Ron Rivera reportedly signed a two-year contract extension.

According to Jourdan Rodrique and Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer, Rivera will receive $15.5 million over the 2019 and 2020 seasons. The 2018 season is the last of a three-year, $19.5 million extension Rivera signed two years ago.

The Panthers, who will have a new owner this year after Jerry Richardson sells the team following workplace misconduct allegations, will pay Rivera for the next three seasons. However, that doesn't guarantee that Rivera will stay the head coach through 2020 if the team's new owner decides to go in a new direction.

Rivera has been with the Panthers as their head coach since the 2011 season, which was the rookie season for Carolina star quarterback Cam Newton after he was selected with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Via a press release from the Panthers' official team website:

“I’m very excited about it because I really like where we are as a football team,” Rivera said. “We’ve done some really good things and we have an opportunity to do more. Things are in place and we can continue this success. We’ve had consistency of winning and we’ve gone to the playoffs four out of five years.

In his tenure with the Panthers, Rivera has compiled a 64-47-1 regular season record, and he is 3-3 in playoff games.
