Former Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith has never been afraid to voice his opinion, on Teddy Bridgewater or any other topic. Over his 16-year NFL career, Smith was consistently known as one of the league's best trash talkers.

Now retired, Smith is not afraid to let it be known that he's not completely convinced with Teddy Bridgewater being Carolina's quarterback of the future. On an interview with First Take on ESPN, Smith voiced that he believes that the Panthers will be drafting their franchise QB at some point.

“I look at free agency as a quick fix and that's what it is. It's ducktape,” Smith said. “The draft is about hetting longterm acquisitions. You do your homework, you get their social security number, you get all of their information. That's what the draft is.”

This offseason, Carolina decided to move on from former MVP Cam Newton when they signed former New Orleans Saints QB Teddy Bridgewater to a three-year, $63 million contract.

” … And Teddy Bridgewater, for Matt Rhule and the Carolina Panthers, that's ther guy for right now but don't be mistaken, at some point, they will draft a quarterback for the future,” Smith added. “When Jake Delhomme was released in Carolina, they drafted Jimmy Clausen — didnt work, they draft Tony Pike — didn't work and then they drafted a guy named Cam Newton and it worked.”

The Panthers are looking for Bridgewater to give them a bit of a fresh start as well as the hirings of new head coach Matt Rhule and offensive coordinator Joe Brady who helped coach Bridgewater in New Orleans in 2018.
