The 2018 NFL Draft is just a little over a month away, and one of the issues the New England Patriots will be looking to address there is the improvement of their defense. The Patriots, however, are picking second to the last in the first round, meaning they will likely miss the chance of getting top-tier defensive talent,  Bradley Chubb.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick definitely knows that it’s a long shot for his team to get Chubb, but nevertheless attended the defensive end’s pro day last Monday. According to The MMQB, Belichick briefly spoke with Chubb, telling the NFL prospect that he is unlikely to become a Patriot in his first year in the league because of New England’s draft position.

Bill Belichick met Bradley Chubb for the first time at Chubb’s pro day, but the Patriots’ coach made clear that he wouldn’t be picking the pass rusher. “We’re picking 31st … Not a chance we’ll see you there.”

Here's the short exchange between Belichick and Chubb:

Chubb must have been honored to see that the only NFL head coach in attendance during his pro day was Bill Belichick, who, like most people who saw the NC State product work out that day, was awed by the pass-rusher’s skills. The Patriots finished tied for seventh last season in sacks with 42.0. They have also made adjustments on their stop unit this offseason by adding Danny Shelton and Adrian Clayborn, and if the Pats could find a way getting Chubb, it would only make New England’s defense sturdier than it was in 2017, when New England finished 29th in total yards allowed per game.

In four seasons in college, Chubb racked up 198 total tackles and 54.5 sacks.
