New England Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement on Monday. The moment that happened, many started to speculate about his return.

According to Darin Gantt of ProFootballTalk, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick wasn't one of those people, as he refuses to comment on a possible return.

It's unusual for so much speculation about a return to surface the day of a retirement announcement. Rob Gronkowski is anything but usual though. He's still just 29 and is already one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history.

Due to that, Gronkowski could still easily play at a high level for quite a few more seasons. That makes it not so surprising that many believe he's not actually done with the game.

Of course, it's not unusual for Bill Belichick to keep his cards close to his chest. The head coach isn't one of many words when it comes to talking with the media.

This is also a situation where it would be irresponsible for him to comment on a player returning. If he were to undermine Gronkowski's announcement, this whole thing would seem like a sham.

With all that in mind, of course Belichick wasn't going to comment on a hypothetical situation. He's never been one to wonder about things that aren't real at the moment. So why would he start now? Belichick is probably much more concerned with the players that are actually on his roster at the moment.

Yes, there's absolutely a chance we see Rob Gronkowski suit up in the NFL again. There's also a chance we see him trying to F5 Brock Lesnar in the WWE though – or pursuing another passion.

This close after his retirement, anything is possible. New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick seems to know that – and isn't ready to comment just yet.
