The New England Patriots shut down an explosive Los Angeles Rams offense in one of the best defensive performances we have ever seen in a Super Bowl for a 13-3 win in the big game back on Feb. 3.

Not known for their defensive chops in 2018, the Patriots held the Rams without a point in the first half and completely took away Todd Gurley while pressuring Jared Goff nonstop.

And who played a pivotal role in New England's defensive outing? None other than backup quarterback Brian Hoyer, of course.

Patriots defensive backs Devin McCourty and Jason McCourty, who are twin brothers, credited Hoyer for his role in the Pats' Super Bowl win, saying that he did an incredible job making reads:

“Hoyer’s been crucial,” said Jason, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. “Hoyer’s not a scout-team quarterback from the standpoint where, ‘O.K., here’s the card, here’s what’s circled, and I’m gonna throw the ball here.’ Hoyer lines up, and says, ‘here’s the card, but this is just a route concept.’ He’s reading our defense for what he thinks it is—‘if it’s Cover-3, I’m going here.’ So the whole time, he’s reading and reacting. So I think for us as a defense, if something gets carved up in practice, it’s ‘Hey, Hoyer, what were you seeing there? O.K., that’s something we need to adjust from a look standpoint.’”

Devin added that Bill Belichick would even ask Hoyer for his thoughts specifically.

It certainly worked well for the Patriots as they captured yet another Super Bowl title.
