Despite a 26-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in their game on Monday night, the New England Patriots might get some good news soon. There’s a chance that quarterback Cam Newton could return to the team as soon as this week after missing the game against the defending Super Bowl champions after testing positive for COVID-19 over the weekend, according to Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.

This positive test caused a delay in the game against the Chiefs, which was supposed to be played on Sunday night. None of Newton's teammates tested positive for COVID-19, so the game was played on Monday night. Newton, according to reports, has been asymptomatic, raising hope for his quick return after missing the game against Kansas City.

The 31-year-old only needs to test negative for COVID-19 twice, and those tests have to be at least 24 hours apart. If he is able to do that, he will be permitted to rejoin his team when they play the Denver Broncos on Sunday. The Patriots are still holding out hope that the former MVP can return against the Broncos.

This is welcome news for New England, as their offense struggled against the Chiefs, scoring a season-low 10 points. Quarterback Brian Hoyer started for the Pats, but he struggled and was benched and replaced by Jarrett Stidham, who didn't fare all that much better. Stidham had one passing touchdown, but he was intercepted twice by Kansas City, including a pick-6. However, that was more on Julian Edelman than Stidham.

If Newton can return, the Patriots will be in a much better position to claim their third win of the season, as he was been playing well for Bill Belichick before being sidelined after testing positive for the virus. Let's hope Newton is able to get past this and give it a go.
