After a massive misunderstanding that is hard to follow along with, New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton will miss the next five days of practice due to Covid-19 protocols.

The whole ordeal is tricky to keep up with but, the Patriots did release a statement on Monday trying to sort everything out.

“On Saturday, Cam Newton traveled to a club-approved medical appointment that required him to leave the New England area. He received daily Covid tests, which were all negative. Due to a misunderstanding about tests conducted away from NFL facilities, and as required by the NFL-NFLPA protocols, Cam will be subject to the five-day entry cadence process before returning to the facility. Cam will continue participating virtually in team activities and return to the club facility on Thursday, August 26.”

Anyone want to bet how thrilled Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is about all of this?

Newton, as noted, will now miss the next five days and could miss the preseason finale for the Patriots as well. Does it open the door for Mac Jones to slide in? That's unlikely, as Belichick previously noted that Jones would have to clearly be outperforming Newton to take the starting gig away.

In either case, Newton missing this amount of time will give the Patriots an even larger look at their No. 15 overall pick out of Alabama.

Newton has looked far more settled in and comfortable this offseason with the Patriots than he did in year one a season ago. Still, Jones is looming in the distance on the depth chart.
