New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton suffered a right hand injury at OTAs on Friday, according to Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston.

Newton left a quarterback drill about an hour into a workout and consulted with team doctors. The veteran was clearly in some pain:

The Patriots quarterback continually pronated his right wrist to simulate a follow-through and he seemed to be focused on the area of his right hand between his index finger and his thumb.

Newton had his hands on his head at one point while meeting with Price and Whalen. He also was doubled over after meeting with medical personnel, clearly uncomfortable, before taking a knee and hanging his head for a moment.

With Newton sidelined, that left more work for Brian Hoyer, Mac Jones and Jarrett Stidham. Apparently Stidham ruled the day among these quarterbacks, but obviously most of the hype right now is surrounding Jones after the Patriots drafted him in the first round.

As Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer notes, Newton's injury could open the door for Jones to take the reins as the starting quarterback:

It's unclear just how bad Newton's hand injury is. It very well could be nothing. However, his hold on the starting position is likely rather tenuous. He didn't exactly light it up last season for the Patriots, who missed the playoffs for the first time in a long time thanks to their 7-9 record.

If Jones or even Stidham play well throughout camp, they could wrestle the job away from Newton in the near future.
