The New England Patriots came up short in the preseason finale. Fortunately, they were able to get their first look at wide receiver Demaryius Thomas in some real action.

Thomas was able to suit up for the first time since he suffered a torn Achilles last season. According to Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal, the veteran said he feels even better than he did before the injury:

“I actually feel a lot better now,” Thomas said. “Before the injury, I was a little smaller. But I’m a little heavier, a little stronger. The program we’ve been doing here has helped out a lot, so I feel great.”

It is safe to say that Thomas was able to solidify that notion with a strong performance in his comeback game. He managed to torch the Giants for seven receptions, 87 yards, and two touchdowns. The Patriots are undoubtedly hoping it is a sign of what is to come in the 2019 NFL season.

The retirement of tight end Rob Gronkowski this offseason has left a notable void in quarterback Tom Brady's receiving corps. Fortunately, Thomas could potentially provide another big-bodied target for Brady to throw too alongside wide receiver Josh Gordon. The 31-year-old is now looking to compete for an integral role in the passing game with the start of the regular season.

Thomas will have a long way to go before establishing himself as a trusted option for Brady this season. Regardless, his experience should provide this group with some much-needed stability as New England looks to defend its title.
