New England Patriots star linebacker Dont'a Hightower was among the most prominent NFL players to opt out of the 2020 NFL season, joining Green Bay Packers wide receiver Devin Funchess and Philadelphia Eagles receiver Marquise Goodwin.
In a message to Patriots fans, the 30-year-old three-time Super Bowl champion linebacker explained his decision to forgo the 2020 season, specifically citing his responsibilities to his family (via ProFootballTalk).
Hightower, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, has spent his entire eight-year professional tenure on the Patriots when New England selected the then-Alabama standout linebacker with the 25th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Since then, Hightower has developed into a core member of Bill Belichick's defense for the Patriots, racking up 25.5 sacks in his career along with 505 combined tackles.
Dont'a Hightower may be one of many NFL players — not just those on the Patriots — opening the floodgates for athletes reconsidering participating in contact sports in the fall and winter.
