The New England Patriots are adding a former player to their coaching staff as Jerod Mayo will become the team's new linebackers coach heading into the 2019 NFL season. Mayo was a linebacker for the team for eight seasons and remained a loyal member of the Patriots community.

Mayo was one of the league's best linebackers in his prime as he once accumulated 175 combined tackles back in 2010. Mayo was named to the First-team All-Pro roster in 2010 and was also named Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2008.

To say Mayo had a successful career would be a massive understatement considering his numerous Pro Bowl selections and Super Bowl victory in 2014 against the Seattle Seahawks. Mayo is just the kind of coach the team could use considering they just lost former linebackers coach and defensive coordinator Brian Flores to the Miami Dolphins. Flores took the head coaching job with Miami and Mayo could soon play a similar role to what Flores had done.

Mayo was a fantastic player and likely will be a great coach for the team's linebackers. A team with plenty of talent at the position including Dont'a Hightower and Kyle Van Noy, Mayo will surely take their game to the next level.

The Patriots always remain a legitimate contender even after losing key players, they overcome adversity and recently have made the Super Bowl the last four seasons. Mayo and could find himself getting yet another Super Bowl ring, but this time as a coach which could be just as rewarding for the former All-Pro linebacker.
