The New England Patriots are beginning their training camp this week but they will be without one of their offensive weapons. Julian Edelman will miss training camp with the team due to an injury.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Edelman is recovering from a broken thumb. Apparently, the veteran wideout suffered the injury a few weeks ago while playing catch.

Although, Edelman is fully expected to be back before the regular season starts in September. That's good news for Patriots fans as New England will rely on him to be a reliable source of offense again in 2019.

This offseason, the Patriots watched Rob Gronkowski retire—leaving a void in the offense. New England drafted N'Keal Harry and signed guys like Demaryius Thomas and Dontrelle Inman.

Although, Thomas isn't the same receiver he once was and Inman has yet to prove he can be a consistent part of an offense. Plus, the Patriots don't know if Josh Gordon will be able to return this season yet.

That leaves a large share of the passing attempts to go in Edelman's direction. Last season, Edelman missed the first four games of the season due to a suspension.

When the Patriots wide receiver returned, he immediately became a focal point of their offense. In the end, he ended up winning Super Bowl MVP in Super Bowl 53 with 10 receptions for 146 yards.

Now, at 33-years old, Edelman will be relied upon again as the main target of Tom Brady's. With that being said, New England will just have to wait to get back on the field after breaking his thumb.
