New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman has only ever known one starting quarterback: Tom Brady. Naturally, this season mandates a learning curve with Cam Newton.

The Patriots' quarterback competition is in full swing, with Newton — a former NFL MVP — expected to be the starter come Week 1.

Edelman commented on his developing chemistry with Cam Newton and the rest of the quarterback room, saying “we’re just trying to get to know each other… trying to build a rapport.”

It would seem the entire Patriots offense could have something of a learning curve during training camp. New England is trying to get adequate reps for Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer in addition to Newton.

Moreover, both Newton and Stidham are mobile quarterbacks capable of making plays outside the pocket. Perhaps offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has some wrinkles in mind, though new schemes will also require an adjustment period.

Edelman figures to be the most reliable receiving threat, regardless of who is under center when the season begins.

The 34-year-old went over the 1,000-yard mark for the third time in his career in 2019, hauling in 100 receptions for 1,117 yards and six touchdowns. New England did not add much at the receiver spot this offseason, meaning Edelman and guys like N'Keal Harry will be expected to make themselves presentable as steady receiving options.

Cam is still getting used to new surroundings, too. Newton spent the entirety of his career with the Carolina Panthers before they released him this spring.

The Patriots are hoping to remain competitive as they enter life without Brady, and the dynamic between Newton and Edelman figures to play a major part in the success (or lack thereof) of the passing game.
