The New England Patriots appear to be on the cusp of some major changes under center this offseason. fortunately, wide receiver Mohamed Sanu is one step closer to making a healthy return.

San had been dealing with an ankle injury down the stretch of the 2019 NFL season. According to NFL Network's Mike Girardi, he has successfully undergone surgery to repair it:

Sanu had initially suffered the injury during a punt return against the Philadelphia Eagles in just his third game in New England after being acquired in a trade. Although Sanu was going to avoid surgery this offseason, its lingering status ultimately spurred him to go through with the surgery.

The Patriots made headlines when they parted ways with a second-round pick in order to bring Sanu to town ahead of the trade deadline. After all, the team was in desperate need of some more firepower on offense and the veteran was poised to take on an integral role in the passing game for quarterback Tom Brady. Unfortunately, it never came to fruition as he struggled to find his footing and wound up registering a mere 26 receptions for 207 receiving yards and a touchdown after the trade.

Sanu's struggled could be partly attributed to the fact that he was hobbled by the ankle during the bulk of his time in New England. Now that he is working his way back to 100%, he will have an opportunity for a potential resurgence in the 2020 NFL season.

Of course, it remains to be seen who he will be receiving passes from since Brady could pursue another option in free agency.
