New England Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski is likely still celebrating the team's Super Bowl victory from this past Sunday. The Patriots have to determine whether they will keep Gostkowski heading into the 2019 NFL season and it's a real possibility they may not. Gostkowski is the highest paid kicker in the league, but this year he showed signs of slowing down a bit.

According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, the possibility of Gostkowski staying with New England is not as likely as many would think considering his success with the team over the years.

“The 35-year-old Gostkowski probably has to agree to less money than he made in 2018 for Belichick to even consider keeping him. Gostkowski had a $5 million cap hit in 2018, which was the third-highest for a kicker in the NFL last season. And Gostkowski did not play like a Top 3 kicker. He was a mediocre 27-for-32 with a long of 52 yards in the regular season, and his ability to boot the ball high and deep on kickoffs has declined with age.”

The Patriots face a decision that may not bode well for Gostkowski, at least not in terms of him remaining with the team. New England does not often overpay for any one player, especially not if your performance is taking a dive.

Gostkowski could be on a different team in 2019 for the first time in his career after being drafted by New England in the fourth round back in 2006.
