It was announced on Monday afternoon that the New England Patriots would make a significant roster move this week. According to an officialstatement released by Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, the AFC East franchise has elected to part ways with veteran tight end Ben Watson, who had yet to suit up for New England this season as the result of a four-game suspension.

Watson, who previously went off into retirement before returning to the fold as a member of the Patriots this offseason, was notably suspended after violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.

“The God of victory is also God in failure,” tweeted Watson upon learning of his fate in New England. “I gave my all, but it was not enough to earn a spot on the @Patriots roster. I’m beyond disappointed but even more upset for my family who has supported me with all the love a husband and father could ask for. They are my heroes. Rom 8:28″

Despite his veteran status, Watson would have found himself at No. 3 on the Patriots depth chart behind fellow tight ends Ryan Izzo and Matt LaCosse. It is also worth noting that Watson was originally brought in by the aforementioned Belichick and the Patriots to help fill at least part of the void left by recently retired tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Even in the absence of “Gronk” and now Watson, the always dangerous Patriots are not surprisingly sitting atop the AFC East division at a perfect 4-0 on the season.
