The New England Patriots had made several moves with their group of wide receivers this offseason that has put forth some new faces for reigning league MVP Tom Brady to throw to next season.

However, this will no longer include wideout Jordan Matthews as the team has elected to part ways with him shortly after suffering a hamstring injury over the weekend, according to Jim McBride of the Boston Globe.

Matthews was expected to take on a significant role in the passing game after the Patriots had seen the departure of a pair of key players at the position with Brandin Cooks being traded to the Los Angeles Rams and Danny Amendola signing a deal in free agency with the Miami Dolphins. This had opened up an opportunity for him to re-establish himself as a promising wide receiver in the league after a rough go-around in his lone campaign with the Buffalo Bills that was derailed by nagging injuries.

This appears that yet another injury has cost him the chance to latch onto the Patriots next season. Depending on the seriousness of the ailment, it is something that can linger on over the next several weeks that could keep him off the field for a sizable chunk of training camp and preseason. The decision to part ways with him doesn't put too much of a financial burden on New England as the team inked him to a one-year, $1 million deal earlier this offseason.

Matthews will have a chance to continue his NFL career elsewhere as he has proven he could be a high-impact player. In his first three years in the league with the Philadelphia Eagles, he notched at least 65 catches for 800 receiving yards and a total of 19 touchdowns over that span. Matthews has plenty to offer that could lead to him quickly getting a shot elsewhere in the league.
