The New England Patriots are looking to stay active this offseason as they re-toll their roster. They are looking to shore up as much cap room as possible as they prepare for the 2018 NFL season.

As a result, they have had to part ways with a number of players in free agency. According to ESPN's Field Yates, they have released linebacker Shea McClellin following a failed physical designation:

It has been a rough stretch for McClellin, to say the least. The former 19th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft had shown some promise with the Chicago Bears before coming to New England. Unfortunately, his stint with the Patriots lasted just one season due to lingering head injuries.

McClellin registered 41 tackles and a sack in 14 games during the 2016 campaign. However, he was forced to miss the entire 2017 NFL season after sustaining multiple concussions. That said, New England felt they were better off parting ways by saving $2.35 million against the cap with his release.

Despite his release, the veteran is still looking to make his return this year, per Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald:

He suffered two concussions during the year, and it’s not clear if concussions were part of the failed physical. McClellin, who appeared in 14 regular-season games in 2016, does have hopes of playing this year.

While the details of his release remain to be seen, any team potentially interested in his services will have to inquire about his health. Fortunately, McClellin still has plenty of time to get back to 100 percent before the start of next season.
