Sony Michel had a phenomenal year for the New England Patriots this past season and was integral in their run to a sixth Super Bowl championship, but some extra depth in the backfield never hurts.

That's why the Patriots have met with University of Massachusetts running back Marquis Young, according to Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst.

It's not like New England doesn't have enough talent behind Michel already, as James White and Rex Burkhead are both reliable options, but given Young's consistency at Massachusetts, he might end up being a good get.

Young is coming off of a senior campaign in which he rushed for 778 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging 5.1 yards per carry.

He got his collegiate career started in 2015, when he totaled 973 yards and nine scores, tallying an impressive 6.3 yards per attempt. Then, the following year, Young finished with 898 yards while reaching the end zone four times on the ground, recording 4.6 yards per carry. He went on to display a bit more versatility during his junior season, finishing with 982 yards and nine touchdowns as a rusher while also hauling in 35 receptions for 280 yards and a couple of scores.

The Patriots won 11 games and captured their 10th straight AFC East division title this past season and earned a first-round bye in the playoffs. They then defeated the Los Angeles Chargers in the Divisional Round and topped the Kansas City Chiefs in an overtime thriller during the AFC Championship Game before beating the Los Angeles Rams in the Super Bowl.
