The New England Patriots made a rather surprising move earlier this week, placing wide receiver Josh Gordon on the injured reserve list due to a knee injury.

The thing is, it is believed that Gordon's injury is not that severe, which makes the Patriots' decision to put him on injured reserve peculiar.

The move is expected to end Gordon's time in New England, as many are anticipating that the Pats will waive him.

Fellow Patriots wide receiver Phillip Dorsett said that “everybody was surprised” about the news but added that it means someone else will just have to step up in Gordon's place:

“It’s nothing new. It happens every year,” Dorsett said, according to Ryan Hannable of WEEI. “The thing that makes this group really, really good is that we’re interchangeable and we’re resilient. I got traded two years ago, Josh got traded here last year and we got Sanu now. Things happen.”

Dorsett was referring to New England's trade earlier in the week, where it landed receiver Mohamed Sanu from the Atlanta Falcons.

Gordon was in the midst of a disappointing season with the Pats, as he had logged just 20 catches for 287 yards and a touchdown in six games.

The 28-year-old originally arrived in Foxborough via trade with the Cleveland Browns midway through last season. In 11 games with the Patriots in 2018, he caught 40 passes for 720 yards and three scores. He was then hit with an indefinite suspension for violating the NFL's drug policy.

Gordon entered the NFL with the Browns in 2012 and had two great years to start his career, but between 2014 and 2017, he played in just 10 contests due to a litany of drug-related bans.
